All
the various schools mentioned on the Fartown School website
are schools that have occupied the same premises on Wasp
Nest Road, Back Honoria Street and Lea Street.
The
school complex that once housed Hillhouse Junior &
Infant School, Hillhouse County School (boys), Hillhouse
County School (girls), and Hillhouse Central School occupied
the premises that initially opened in 1905 as Hillhouse
Elementary School.
Fartown
School really started when Hillhouse County School for
boys and Hillhouse County School for girls joined to form
seven classes on the 3rd September, 1953. At the start
of this new term the school become known as Fartown Secondary
Modern School.
When
Hillhouse Secondary Technical School closed in 1958, Fartown
School enlarged and took over the Central School premises.
During
the mid sixties the school changed its name once again,
this time to Fartown County Modern School. Then in 1968
Fartown School moved to new premises at Woodhouse Hill.
The school became a comprehensive in 1974 and is now known
as Fartown High School.
The
old premises at Wasp Nest Road then became Birkby Junior
School, which is still in operation today. If you were
to visit the school today, you would still see the name
'Hillhouse Board School' carved in the stone above the
main entrance on Wasp Nest Road.
In 2007 part of the school (once Hillhouse Infants School)
was converted for use as a Library and Information Centre,
and what was at one time Hillhouse Girls School has now
been turned into a Community Centre (for more information
see our Birkby & Fartown Library
and Community Centre page).
