If you have not been able to visit the area in the last few months, you may be unaware that part of what used to be Fartown Secondary Modern School, and before that Hillhouse Girls School and Hillhouse Infant School, has now been made into a community centre and a library and information centre.

Picture one, below, shows the community centre (click on the image for a larger picture) and picture four shows a close-up of the centre.

Picture three shows the library and information centre, whereas picture two shows the entrance to both of these centres, with what was at one time the school caretaker's house in between.

Community Centre
The building can be used for a range of events with rooms suitable for meetings, functions and family celebrations.
Rooms are hired and charged for by the hour and you get free use of kitchen facilities when booking rooms.

A variety of regular activities take place in the building. The price of the rooms (with their capacity in brackets) are shown below but you are advised to confirm these prices on the Kirklees website, or call the Deighton Centre Bookings Office on 01484 225700/225711.

Small hall: £20.38 (80)
Birkby Room: £10.86 (10)
Fartown lounge: £16.29 (30)
Multi-room 1: £10.86 (15)
Multi-room 2: £10.86 (20)
Kitchen: Free

Library and Information Centre
As well as having the traditional library service, including free use of public access computers and internet, the information point also operates a bill payment service as well as the provision of advice and guidance on a variety of other council services. A free phone allows customers direct access to other council departments.

In the Library and Information Centre you are able to:

• Borrow a wide range of books
• Sort out your council tax
• Access the internet
• Use a photocopier
• Apply for a Kirklees Passport

Opening times are as follows, but once again you are advised to confirm these times by checking the Kirklees Council (Information Centres) website or by calling them on 01484 223098.
